Red Bull Music Academy Beat:Repeat NYC

To kick off the 2014 Red Bull Music Academy in New York City, Yours Truly’s eight-part documentary series Beat:Repeat told the story of iconic NYC anthems and the vintage drum machines that underpinned them.

Story

Over the course of each episode, an artist deeply involved in the making of the track introduced viewers to the story behind the beat, and the moment of inspiration that birthed a classic. From disco to dance punk, thrash metal to hip hop, beat:repeat NYC covers a wide variety of sounds, drum machines and personalities.

Design

YT employed powerful portraiture and purposeful lighting to elevate each drum machine from that of a dusty old relic into a true hero, the vehicle from which greatness sprung.

Illustration, custom typography, and motion graphics animate key moments of each episode, creating richly rendered texture tailored to support each story arc.

Archival Film & Photography

So much of this series’ success rested on our ability to transport viewers to the era of the song’s genesis. To accomplish this we took to the archives, uncovering hours of home video, stacks of photos, contact sheets, and letters. These time-stamped artifacts added the requisite texture for time travel.

Original Score

Each episode features original scoring from RBMA alum Salva, commissioned and cut into each episode by Yours Truly.
